The spirit of poverty.

The spirit of poverty. Today I have come to understand this mentality in such a tangible way, more than ever before... We moved from Bujumbura (the capital) to Muramvya (the mountains) about 2 1/2 years ago. This was a huge transition, but we grew to love the mountain life and people. Now we are beginning the transition from Muramvya (the province center) to Bukeye (1 of the 5 Communes within Muramvya on the outskirts); and it has seemed as though we are in a completely different place then we have known for the past years. We chose to build the Village of Jeremiah 29:11 in Bukeye as we saw a vast need and a community stricken by severe poverty in need of hope. Yes, daily we see mud huts, malnutritioned children, many poor people begging for help and the list goes on. These are normal things you encounter going up country and even some places in the city... But today, while spending some time in Bukeye I saw a poverty that was so much deeper than what appears to be before the eye. The atmosphere was tense, desperation was in the hearts of many, a young man tried to open the car door when Isai was with Malaki, a baby near our land was abandoned at birth found with a plastic bag wrapped around his neck... and once again, the list goes on.

Isai and I were talking today how different Bukeye is from what we have known for the past few years of living in the mountains... Surely a spirit of poverty like I have never experienced here. Is that to say that Bukeye is the poorest and most neediest place in all Burundi? Absolutely not, but from what I have personally experienced, it's like nothing I have felt before.

We went to our land today in the evening to take time to pray and declare the promises of God over our land and community. It never fails to look up into the sky as though the heavens are open right above us. God has a plan for this place and He will restore their hope for the future. We pray, "Come Lord Jesus, Come."

We are progressing in the construction of our first children's home and it's exciting to see the excellence in which all things upon our land are done. (Great job Isai and team!) Our children are doing great, and will be coming to the land to help out the next 2 Friday's! God is faithful. Until next time...
